When an agreement was met between what came to be known as “The Second Triumvirate”, Antony, Lepidus and Octavian put down a list of enemies who should be killed. Most important among them was Cicero, senior stateman and Antony’s chief enemy. According to Cassius Dio, when Antony’s wife Fulvia, who had been married to another of Cicero’s enemies as well, saw Cicero’s severed head, she “pulled out the tongue, which she pierced with the pins that she used for her hair”, as retaliation for the orator’s speeches against her husbands.
