One of my favourite things about studying the classics – particularly Ancient Greek stuff – is that many popular and well-regarded translators seem to have only one setting. Everything they translate comes out either very casual and off-the-cuff or very grand and formal, regardless of content or context. Like, what’s it gonna be today? An epic tale of the fate of nations delivered with all the gravitas of an anecdote about something funny that happened at the grocery store? Or a dick joke in
dactylic hexameter?
