mostly-history: Tombstone of Lucius Duccius R…

mostly-history:

Tombstone of Lucius Duccius Rufinus, who fell in battle at the age of twenty-eight.  The memorial reads:

Lucius Duccius Rufinus, of the Voltinian voting-tribe, from Vienne
[in France], standard-bearer of the Ninth Legion, aged 28, lies
buried here.

The standard-bearer is depicted wearing a tunic and pointed cloak,
holding the maniple standard with its medallions in his right hand.
In his left hand, he holds what is probably a codex ansatus,
or volume of records.  The tombstone was located in Trinity Gardens,
behind the Trinity Church in Micklegate (York), and is now in the
Yorkshire Museum.
